Aiogram: get chat_id and user ID (examples)

In Aiogram (Python Telegram Bot framework), you get chat_id and user_id from the update object. Here are practical examples.

From a message

@router.message()
async def handle_message(message: Message):
    chat_id = message.chat.id
    user_id = message.from_user.id
    await message.answer(f"Chat ID: {chat_id}, User ID: {user_id}")

From a callback query

@router.callback_query()
async def handle_callback(callback: CallbackQuery):
    chat_id = callback.message.chat.id
    user_id = callback.from_user.id
    await callback.answer()
    await callback.message.answer(f"Chat ID: {chat_id}, User ID: {user_id}")

From channel_post

@router.channel_post()
async def handle_channel_post(message: Message):
    chat_id = message.chat.id  # channel ID
    # No from_user for channel posts
    await message.answer(f"Channel ID: {chat_id}")

Debugging with @print_id_bot

Use @print_id_bot to inspect update structure:

Forward a message to the bot and send /dump to see the exact structure Aiogram receives.

FAQ

Where is chat_id for inline queries?

For InlineQuery, use inline_query.from_user.id for the user. There is no chat in the same sense; you answer with answer_inline_query.

Does chat_id change for groups?

After migration to supergroup, it can. Always use the value from the current update. See group vs supergroup chat_id.

How do I get chat_id before the user sends a message?

You cannot. The bot receives updates when the user interacts. Use /start or any message to get it.

Can I use /dump for channel_post?

@print_id_bot’s /dump works on updates you send to it. For channel structure, forward a channel post to the bot and use /dump on that.

What if from_user is None?

For channel_post, there is no from_user. For very old API versions, it might be missing; check before access.

Use @print_id_bot /dump to inspect update structure for Aiogram.
